Leica BLK360 Gen 2 vs Gen 1: 3D Scanning in Architecture
BLK360 Scanning in Architecture
3D scanning has transformed architectural workflows by capturing precise site data and feeding it directly into design software. What began with limited tools like phone-based LiDAR and Matterport has evolved into highly accurate professional scanners that enable firms of all sizes to work faster and more confidently.
“The BLK360 has made scanning the foundation of our design process.”
From Gen 1 to Gen 2
Leica BLK360 Gen 1
The first BLK360, released in 2016, captured up to 360,000 points per second with an accuracy of about 6 mm at 10 m. While a leap forward from consumer devices, scans could take several minutes with HDR imaging enabled, making large projects time-intensive. Its maximum range reached roughly 60 m, and it included a thermal sensor for added data capture.
Leica BLK360 Gen 2
The second generation, released in 2022, nearly doubled performance with 680,000 points per second and improved accuracy to ~4 mm at 10 m (about 1/8 inch). Full dome scans with HDR can now be completed in as little as 20 seconds. The Gen 2 is also lighter (0.85 kg vs. ~1.0 kg), smaller in form, and adds the Visual Inertial System (VIS) for automatic pre-registration in the field. Its maximum range is ~45 m, optimized for speed and efficiency rather than distance.

Key Improvements
Speed
Gen 2 reduces scanning time dramatically. Where Gen 1 often required several minutes per scan with HDR photos, Gen 2 completes scans in ~20–30 seconds. On large projects with hundreds of scans, this translates to hours saved on site.
Accuracy
At 10 meters, accuracy improved from ~6 mm (Gen 1) to ~4 mm (Gen 2). For architects, that margin ensures greater confidence in measurements and reduces the need for repeat site visits.
Imaging
HDR imaging advanced from a 3-bracket system in Gen 1 to a 5-bracket system in Gen 2, producing higher-quality photo overlays. This delivers richer, more realistic point clouds for visualization and client presentations.
Workflow Integration
Gen 2 added USB-C data transfer, expanded onboard storage, and VIS for automatic scan alignment. These features streamline fieldwork and make collaboration faster, especially when paired with Autodesk Recap Pro for point cloud processing.
Implications for Design
With Gen 2, small and mid-sized firms can now leverage the same scanning precision once reserved for large practices. The combination of speed, accuracy, and integration enables architects to design directly from reliable as-built models, improve collaboration with contractors, and deliver clearer client presentations through VR and rendering workflows.
As AI-assisted recognition and automation advance, the potential of point cloud data will only expand— automatically identifying walls, openings, or surfaces for even more efficient modeling. For now, the BLK360 Gen 2 represents a practical leap forward: faster, sharper, and fully aligned with the future of architectural practice.
