Lake House Addition
A lake house addition at Apple Valley Lake in Howard, Ohio, adding a first-floor primary suite, a longer living room and a larger deck that faces the water.

The project
Many older houses at Apple Valley Lake were built as vacation homes, without a true primary suite. This addition in Howard, Ohio, adds a first-floor primary suite, extends the living room toward the lake, and gives an existing house room instead of starting over.
Adding on instead of buying new
Arcfluence has worked on several houses at Apple Valley Lake, and the pattern is consistent. Owners who bought for weekends want to spend more time at the lake, or need more space than the original house offers. A new lake house is expensive. Adding to the house they already own usually gets more for the money and lets the design fix exactly what the original lacks.
A lake house has two fronts.
The water is the one that counts.
A first-floor primary suite
The addition places a primary suite on the first floor, the room these smaller lake houses most often lack. Inside the existing footprint, the kitchen and a bathroom are reworked to function better for everyday use.
A longer living room facing the water
A lakefront house is seen from the road on arrival and from the water everywhere else, and at the lake the water side usually matters more. The living-room extension is designed for that side. It adds floor area and turns more of the room toward the lake, so the view becomes part of daily life inside. The new elevation is also meant to look good from the water, where most people will see it.
A larger deck off the addition
The deck extends along the addition, giving the new living room and suite an outdoor counterpart and carrying everyday living out toward the lake.
